My name is David and I work in construction as a general contractor and builder. About 5 years ago I started having back problems and I went to a back specialist in the University of Miami hospital. She concluded nothing was wrong with my back and the pain was not justified, perhaps it was coming from the hip. As the pain persisted I ended up at a hip specialist in Lennar foundation medical center who gave me a cortisone injection to rule out a torn hip labrum as the cause of the pain. After that was ruled out and as the pain got worse, I went to Ft. Lauderdale to a spine specialist and finally got an MRI. This again didn’t show anything wrong with the area so I got to an impasse. At that point it had been already 2 years on and off dealing with this discomfort. All along my wife had suggested I see her yoga teacher for a private session. I finally took her advice. Anand was able to give me a routine that alleviated the pain and in 3 sessions the mysterious pain was completely gone. I proceeded to have many more private sessions and started going to yoga classes too. I told a lot of my friends about the great results I had with yoga and they couldn’t believe me! To this day after my gym workouts I implement the little magic routine religiously and the pain hasn’t come back. I am grateful to Anand for his help and for teaching me that yoga has something everyone can benefit from according to their needs. I very highly recommend yoga with Anand.
I love movement and I am fascinated by the human body. I have worked in the fitness industry as a strength and conditioning specialist for over 20 years. In my mid thirties I successfully participated in several bodybuilding competitions. I also loved bootcamps and obstacle courses. When I got into a car accident which left me with bulging discs, herniations and degenerations in my cervical spine, resulting in thoracic outlet syndrome, a condition that affects the nerves going down the arms and fingers, my best friend suggested that I try yoga. Such a thing was unheard of for a competitive bodybuilder like myself but my upper body mobility was so restricted at the time, I was desperate.
Walking into that first yoga class I felt upset and lost. To my pleasant surprise it was a very dynamic and powerful sequence of poses and the energy was elevated, the tone was festive. It was nothing like I expected. The teacher of that class was Anand. At the end of the class I told him why I was there and talked about my injury. He replied he also had gone through a lot of injuries, in fact he had had surgery on both his shoulders. Wait a minute! Hadn’t I just witnessed this guy balance on his hands and forearms and perform all other kinds of arm balances?! This is how I knew I had found my teacher. And if there was anyway I would do yoga in this life, it would be through his guidance. Anand helped me tremendously with that particular debilitating injury and over the course of the last twelve years has helped me overcome many more, mainly through private instruction in addition to countless classes. I have also completed numerous hours of yoga teacher trainings with Anand. I continue to lead an extremely active life. Skanda yoga has become a lifestyle for me and at age 50 I am in the best shape of my life thanks to Anand, his exceptional knowledge of the human body and the practice of yoga.
When I moved back to my hometown I was frustrated for three years trying to find a yoga practice that would match Skanda’s level of excellence. Fortunately, the pandemic came with its silver lining and I had the opportunity to take zoom classes with Anand. It’s been four years since we started practicing online and I can attest that no practice compares to Skanda and Anand’s knowledge. It is still my favorite way to practice. I’ve been taking a class weekly and feel so fortunate to be able to be guided by Anand, distance is no longer an impediment. Through zoom he is able to guide you through appropriate modifications for your practice. I’ve been through multiple injuries like a pulled hamstring and I blindly trust that he can adjust my practice to take care of my injuries and actually heal them through time. I also kept my practice through my third pregnancy and he guided me through my postpartum recovery always aware of what my body needed at the moment. His verbal cues and cross training techniques take your practice to the next level and he is even flexible with interruptions since my kids sometimes jump in while I practice. I’m confident that any other practitioner will share my profound gratitude for this opportunity. The transformational journey of yoga has no boundaries and you can now have the best yoga teacher in the comfort of your home or anywhere your yoga journey takes you. How fortunate is that?
I had the incredible privilege to take my first 200hr Yoga Teacher Training with Anand in 2015 and later completed my 500hr YTT with him in 2020 at Skanda Yoga Studio in Miami, FL. When I entered the YTT program I considered yoga to besimply a physical practice and didn’t have an understanding ofthe depth and lineage involved behind the concept of yoga as a philosophy. Anand helped open my eyes to a deeper truth and meaning to the practice and I was able to take a substantive journey through the eight limbs of yoga including Hindu mythology. My experience practicing with Anand was nothing short of purely transformational on a mental, spiritual, and physical level.
One of Anand’s greatest attributes is his continual quest for knowledge and understanding. Like a scientist, he strives to incorporate new information to his teachings, recognizing that we are all students regardless of position. So many yoga practices today are teaching just physical fitness or what I would consider aerobics and that’s ok if that is what a student is looking for. But for those that want to discover truth and understanding than there are few teachers today that can provide the perspective and learning offered by Anand. It is my humble opinion that he should be off living a life of fame and fortune with his immense skills and knowledge, but instead he is grounded and focused on offering authenticity to the few ready to receive his teachings. This is a trait that is harder and harder to find these days at that which defines a guru. If you are lucky enough or wise enough to see through the materialism and ego of what so much of yoga has evolved into today, then I feel you would be blessed with grace by taking an opportunity to study and learn with one of the greatest teachers in existence. I am honored at any chance I have to sit at the feet of my first guru and always feel like a beginner student in his presence.
